Bruce Dern’s Fantasy Commencement Address In Middle Age Crazy – 1980
The claims of impending disaster are pure fabrication,
without one shred of evidence for support.
Not one iota. In fact, history
says just the opposite. The next time
you hear the disaster scenario being preached, ask the speaker what
historical, macroeconomic data does he have to support this contrarian,
doomsday opinion. No, we are not smoking weed. Find our claims hard to believe? We understand. How can we be sure? We can read and perform third grade
mathematics. That is all it
takes. No integrals needed. No differentials required. No degree in economics. If you think we are crazy, just click that
little red “X” in the upper right-hand corner. If you are not sure, keep reading. A few years ago, we went to a major city in this country
to hear a presentation by the finance department that was intended to
convince us that this bulwark was going into the tank. They started with this creative monologue –
“You want to know that after claiming
for thirteen years that our city was going broke and it didn’t, why you
should believe us now?” We were left to answer the profound Groucho Marx
question – “Who are you going to
believe? Me or your lying eyes?”

stronger than the past two? Did you
know that the last three business cycles lasted from eight to ten years? Did you know that the eight prior business
cycles lasted about four years each?
Did you know that the typical recession lasts about one year? Did you know that the 2009 recession has
been over for about one year? Did you
know that unemployment is no indicator of where the economy is headed? Did you know that business cycles are
driven by markets and inventories, not the President and Congress? You thought the economy was like a roulette

that your compensation will be severely impaired if you do not wise up and

All the hoopla about your pension and high salaries is more of a
nuisance than a threat. Oh, there are
changes coming – big changes, but your total compensation will continue to go
